Mission 4: The Silent Cartographer is widely considered one of the greatest FPS levels ever designed. You'll storm a tropical island beach, fight through Covenant defenses, explore a vast underground Forerunner facility, face your first Hunter pair, and activate the Cartographer — a map room revealing the location of Halo's control room.

Walkthrough
Section 1: Beach Landing
The iconic opening — your Pelican touches down on a sun-drenched beach under Covenant fire. You have a choice:
- Fight on the beach: Clear the Covenant forces methodically
- Rush inland: Sprint past enemies to the Forerunner structure entrance
On Normal, either approach works. On Heroic/Legendary, clearing the beach is recommended.
Section 2: The Hunters
Your first Hunter encounter. A pair guards the security override. Strategies:
- Flanking: Circle-strafe to their backs, shoot the orange flesh. One Magnum shot kills a Hunter.
- Shotgun: If you found one, point-blank blasts to the back are devastating.
- Grenades: Plasma grenades stick to Hunters. One stuck grenade + Magnum shots = dead Hunter.
Hunters are intimidating but have a critical weakness: their exposed backs. Don't fight them head-on. Circle-strafe, bait the melee charge, dodge, and shoot them in the back. A single Magnum shot to the back flesh kills a Hunter on any difficulty.
Section 3: Underground Facility
Navigate the multi-level Forerunner structure. Stealth Elites with Energy Swords patrol the corridors — listen for their shimmer and watch for distortion in the air. Shotgun is excellent here for close-quarters Elite encounters.
Section 4: The Cartographer
Activate the map room terminal. Fight the final wave of Covenant defenders — Gold Elites and Grunts. The mission ends with a Pelican extraction as you discover the Control Room's location.
Legendary Tips
- The beach landing on Legendary is brutal. Use the Pelican as cover. Let your marines absorb aggro.
- Stealth Elites one-shot you with Energy Swords on Legendary. Listen carefully and keep your distance.
- The final Cartographer room has minimal cover. Clear enemies before activating the terminal.
